Liberty Classical Academy Graduates First Class of Seniors Four Students Receive Diplomas in School’s First-Ever Graduation Ceremony
[MAPLEWOOD, MN] (June 9, 2008) -- After five years in existence, Liberty Classical Academy awarded diplomas to its first class of seniors in an intimate ceremony on June 6, 2008. Four students, Hillary Bates of Lakeland, Haylee Fosterling of Hudson, WI, Daniel Englund of Shoreview, and Lucas Tristani of Maplewood, took turns addressing the audience of about 200 gathered at First Evangelical Free Church in Maplewood.
In a unique rite, the seniors passed the torch of leadership to this past year’s junior class, lighting a candle held by each upcoming senior. The school’s director and principal founder, Rebekah Hagstrom, commissioned the seniors to pursue purpose and Christian service rather than personal gain and comfort.
Tim Porter, pastor of Faith Community Church in Hudson, WI, where both Bates and Fosterling attend, gave the commencement address. Liberty’s Symphonic band played “Pomp and Circumstance” and its Cantamus Christi choir sang “Instrument of Peace.” Liberty's entire upper school faculty sat with the graduates, and Board Member Scott Sochay, associate professor of communications studies, assisted Hagstrom in presenting the diplomas.
“We believe there’s a reason each one of these young people came to our school to become a member of the first graduating class,” said Hagstrom. “We couldn't be more honored to have educated -- and released -- them to make a difference in the world!”
